Bridging the Gap in Preventative Healthcare Access

Designing a streamlined patient booking system for preventative services

The Challenge

Early detection of health conditions is crucial for improving patient outcomes, yet many struggle to access preventative services.

Sciana connects patients with healthcare providers offering preventative and early-detection services, including baseline and post-injury concussion checks.

I was the lead UIUX designer on this three-month project.
On this project I…

  • Designed a dual-sided platform:

    • A patient-facing booking mobile and desktop system that enables users to search for available providers in their area.

    • A provider-facing web application to manage, perform, and report on services efficiently.

  • Collaborated with Sciana Health founders to ensure user experience aligned with vision and business goals

  • Created user flow diagrams and prototypes with the help of the Lead Technical Consultant

  • Validated prototypes through user testing as well as mid-sprint reviews with internal and external stakeholders stakeholders

I inherited an existing design system and some initial workflows and hi-fi prototypes from a previous designer.

The early patient booking design was influenced by Fresha.com, a popular beauty service booking platform.

The Feedback

Fresha’s model had critical limitations for our healthcare use case

After presenting the first iteration to the client, we identified some challenges:

  • Overly lengthy workflow – The multi-step process increased the risk of user drop-off, which could lead to fewer booked appointments.

  • Limited booking flexibility – Fresha assumes one-person bookings, but we needed to support:

    1. Individual bookings

    2. A guardian booking for a dependent

    3. A third-party booking solely for a dependent

An Alternative Approach

Capturing booking details upfront

Taking inspiration from flight booking systems link Qantas, instead of navigating multiple steps, users first select who they are booking for first

Dynamic appointment availability

Based on the selected participant(s), the system immediately displays relevant provider availability, reducing unnecessary steps.

Fewer clicks + pages, less complexity

Condensed and streamlined workflow resulting in 9 fewer steps across the booking process. This approach significantly shortened the booking process which improved usability.

What’s the impact?

Reduced workflow steps by 65% to increase booking completion rates and accurate appointment scheduling. This improves provider efficiency and creates easier access to patient care.
